چکیده

More than 50 specimens of fossil crabs collected from the Cannonball formation (Paleocene) of southern Morton and Burleigh Counties, south-central North Dakota form the basis for the first report of fossil crustaceans in North Dakota. The new genus Camarocarcinus is created for their reception with the new species C. arnesoni as the type species. A separate, single, large propodus is placed in a new species, Ranina (?) burleighensis, by the senior author. The mode of occurrence suggests a near-shore condition of the Cannonball sea in this part of North Dakota. Close evolutionary affinities between freshwater corbulid bivalves from the Neogene of western Amazonia and Paleogene of the northern Great Plains, USA

Freshwater corbulid bivalves found in Miocene deposits of western Amazonia have been considered products of an endemic radiation of a marine clade within the large lacustrine system occupying the region at that time. Our reexamination of Paleocene freshwater corbulids of the Tongue River Formation of western North Dakota and eastern Montana, however, extends the stratigraphic and geographic ran...

Novel Insect Leaf-Mining after the End-Cretaceous Extinction and the Demise of Cretaceous Leaf Miners, Great Plains, USA

Plant and associated insect-damage diversity in the western U.S.A. decreased significantly at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary and remained low until the late Paleocene. However, the Mexican Hat locality (ca. 65 Ma) in southeastern Montana, with a typical, low-diversity flora, uniquely exhibits high damage diversity on nearly all its host plants, when compared to all known local and reg...

Mammals from the end of the age of dinosaurs in North Dakota and southeastern Montana, with a reappraisal of geographic differentiation among Lancian mammals

An end-Cretaceous nonavian dinosaur extinction and an early Paleocene mammalian radiation is documented primarily in stratigraphic sequences in eastern Montana. To determine how representative these sequences are, we extended investigation of this Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) transition to new areas. Studies in southwestern North Dakota and southeastern Montana provide new records of mammals throu...
